Educate Yourself About Healthy Living NOW


The first point I want to make is that it is essential for you to educate yourself if you are serious about making positive health changes. To empower yourself with helpful knowledge is the best health insurance there is (assuming you take action based on that knowledge). Reading, attending lectures, or finding a good “health coach” can all be extremely valuable. I think it is a mistake to shy away from searching because of the conflicting volumes of literature available.

 

Get Credible Information

 

The second point is that it would best serve you to get your information from credible sources. Does the person or organization have a reputation for being straight with no axe to grind or are they financed by special interests? Corporate America has a tremendous influence on the information the public receives. For example, in the 1970’s there was a hearing in congress (the McGovern Hearings) on the sad state of health of the average American. Their conclusion after two weeks of hearings was that Americans eat way too much sugar, red meat, and dairy. The final report was printed and was to be made available to the public. Then the lobbies for those industries went to work on congress. The result was that the printed report was burned. It is as if those hearings never took place.

 

Remember, The American Heart Association pushed the no cholesterol diet and recommended artificial foods laden with hydrogenated fats and oils in such quantities they would be illegal in most of Europe. It has been known for many years these are some of the most harmful substances to ingest. The American Diabetes Association recommends Nutrasweet for diabetics. Not a good choice, but the makers of Nutrasweet are big contributors to the ADA. The American Medical Association used to promote smoking (remember the UfO magazine ads) when they were large holders of tobacco stocks. Most people today get their information from the popular press, especially television and newspapers. Even if it is accurate information, by the time it gets reported it is usually very old news. You get my point.

 

In the natural arena it seems there is a new miracle cure every week or so. Ask yourself if there aren’t more sales than substance with most of these items. I am always looking for new and better products that can help people but I have also learned not to jump too fast.

 

Who’s Behind It?

 

A couple of questions to ask regarding any product or health philosophy would be, ‘who or what is behind it’? Sometimes you have to dig a little to find this out. The next question is, “Does it make sense?” Intuitively you know the answer. For example when margarine was being promoted as a healthier alternative than butter by so called medical experts, does it make sense that an artificial food (it has been called one step away from plastic) would be better for you than a real food? I still see patients who have been told by a medical specialist that it doesn’t matter what they eat. This is incredible, especially when the patient has irritable bowel syndrome.

 

There are many excellent books available on a wide variety of health issues. There are several newsletters that you can subscribe to. Finding knowledgeable people of whom you can ask questions is a valuable resource. The answers you are looking for are out there. It may take some effort but never, ever, stop searching.
